COMMUNITY FOSTER AND ADOPTER EDUCATION INITIATIVE

Program Overview

Program Name: Community Foster and Adopter Education Initiative. Brought to you by K9 Turbo Training & Second Chances Animal Resources

Duration: 6-month pilot program, July - December 2025

Sponsor: Second Chances Animal Resources

Host Organization: K9 Turbo Training

The Challenge

Shelters and rescues are overwhelmed. Dogs cycle through the system. Fosters burn out. Adoptions fail. Not because people don't care or because the dogs are damaged in any way - but because they lack access to professional-level guidance when they need it most.

Our Solution

A comprehensive professional education initiative that provides expert-level training resources directly to foster families, new adopters, and the organizations that support them - creating a complete support system from shelter to forever home.

The Goal

Address the community's most critical animal welfare need by bridging the resource gap between professional expertise and the people working directly with and adopting shelter dogs. Because when organizations, fosters, and adopters have access to expert-level training resources, outcomes improve across the board - fewer returns, more confident caregivers, and ultimately, more lives saved.

How We're Addressing This

For Foster Families

  • Course Format: Monthly 2-hour professional training courses (FREE to participants)

  • Content: Comprehensive education covering decompression protocols, advanced body language recognition, and behavior management strategies based on research and statistical data about shelter dogs

  • Purpose: Giving fosters the confidence and tools they need to help more dogs succeed

For New Adopters

  • Course Format: Monthly 90-minute professional training courses (FREE to participants)

  • Content: Evidence-based education designed to set dogs and their people up for success using data about what helps dogs thrive in their new homes

  • Focus: Equipping adopters with essential knowledge on the topics that matter most for creating successful, lasting placements

  • Impact: Preventing returns, increasing successful placements, and providing valuable resources that decrease pressure on organizations while helping more dogs and families succeed

For Organizations

  • Support: Complete support systems and resources

  • Why: When rescues have resources, professional backing, and a partnership with qualified training professionals, more dogs benefit and more lives get saved.

Program Success Metrics

This initiative directly addresses the resource gaps we see every day. Our partner organizations will track the impact through:

  • Reduction in return rates

  • Increased foster confidence and retention

  • Increased adopter confidence and access to resources

  • Enhanced community engagement

  • Most importantly: more dogs finding and keeping their forever homes

Pilot Partners

Detroit Animal Care and Control, Rejoyceful Animal Rescue, I Heart Dogs, and Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society are joining us in this 6-month pilot initiative. We will open up to additional partners in January of 2026 after the completion of our pilot.

Program Leadership

K9 Turbo Training

The training organization that is hosting and providing the professional education through Professional Dog Trainers who specialize in both positive reinforcement methods and shelter behavior.

Second Chances Animal Resources

Program sponsor - a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to providing assistance to Animal Welfare organizations, assistance to both people and their animals in need in order to keep them together, and providing education and tools regarding humane treatment of animals.

K9 Turbo Training and Second Chances Animal Resources came together to address this critical community need, recognizing that shelters are under tremendous pressure to help more dogs find homes and often lack the resources to provide the professional behavior education that fosters and adopters need to succeed.

Expected Impact

This pilot program will demonstrate how professional education creates measurable change in animal welfare outcomes. By providing expert guidance at critical points in the shelter-to-home pipeline, we expect to see improved outcomes for dogs, increased confidence for caregivers, and stronger community partnerships that ultimately save more lives.
